Jonah and His Pursuing God

The book of Jonah is about far more than a prophet and a great fish. Jonah is an Israelite prophet sent by God to Nineveh, the capital of Assyria and an enemy of God’s people. But instead of obeying, Jonah runs in the opposite direction. He knows that God is compassionate, merciful, and willing to forgive, and he does not want that mercy extended to people he believes deserve judgment. In this series, we walk verse by verse through Jonah to see the sovereign grace of a God who pursues rebellious people. God pursues Jonah through the storm, preserves him through the great fish, and sends him once again to Nineveh. When the city responds to God’s warning with repentance, the Lord shows compassion. Yet Jonah remains angry, revealing that it is possible to know the truth about God without sharing God’s heart for those who are lost. This book confronts our disobedience, self-righteousness, and tendency to decide who deserves mercy. It also reminds us that God is sovereign over creation, circumstances, nations, and even our failures. His purposes cannot be overturned, and his grace reaches people we might consider beyond hope. Jonah ultimately points us to Jesus, the greater Prophet. Where Jonah ran from God’s command, Jesus willingly obeyed the Father. Where Jonah resented the salvation of his enemies, Jesus gave his life to save sinners and rose again after three days. As we study Jonah together, we will see a God whose mercy is greater than our rebellion and whose grace reaches farther than we could ever imagine.
