Jonah has run from God, been thrown into the sea, and swallowed by a great fish. With no way to save himself, he finally prays. From what feels like the place of death, Jonah calls out to the Lord and discovers that God hears him even in the depths.
Jonah’s prayer is honest and saturated with Scripture, but it is not perfect. He wrestles with unbelief and still does not fully acknowledge his rebellion. Yet God’s mercy does not wait for Jonah to pray perfectly. God has already pursued him, rescued him from the sea, and placed him where he can recognize that the Lord is his only hope.
Jonah warns that those who look to idols abandon their hope of steadfast love. Whatever pit we face, lasting rescue cannot be found in our accomplishments, relationships, comforts, or abilities. Salvation belongs to the Lord.
Jonah’s three days in the fish ultimately point us to Jesus. Jonah descended because of his rebellion, but Jesus willingly descended into death for ours. He rose on the third day, making a way for sinners to draw near to God with confidence. Through Jesus, we can call out to the Father knowing that he hears us and is ready to show mercy.
