As Peter closes his first letter, he calls Christians to humble themselves under the mighty hand of God. In 1 Peter 5:6–14, humility is more than thinking poorly of ourselves or appearing modest. It means understanding that we are weak and dependent on God, while also recognizing that we are deeply loved and have been redeemed at a great cost.
That humility shapes the way Christians respond to anxiety. We do not have the power to control every circumstance or carry every burden ourselves. Instead, God invites us to cast our anxieties on him because he cares for us. He is strong enough to carry what we cannot.
Peter also calls believers to remain watchful and resist the devil by standing firm in faith. The enemy attempts to produce fear and doubt, but Christians resist his accusations by clinging to Jesus and the truth of the gospel. Our suffering is real, but it is temporary. The God of all grace will restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish his people.
This hope is possible because Jesus humbled himself for us. The Lion of Judah became the sacrificial Lamb, enduring the cross to redeem sinners. Because of his humble sacrifice, Christians can trust God’s care, endure suffering, and stand firm in his grace until the end.
